Where to Donate Items in Chicago

As you start preparing for your move you may find items no longer needed. If downsizing you may have too many items to fit in your new home. Donating items before your move means less to pack and move which helps save time and money. Donating not only helps a person in need but the environment as well by keeping items out of landfills. Any charity should provide you with a receipt for your donation. Be sure to save your receipt for tax time as charity donations are tax deductible. Here are a few local places to donate items in Chicago before your move:

The Salvation Army uses the proceeds from sales of goods at their Family Stores to fund their Adult Rehabilitation Centers, where those struggling with drugs and alcohol find help, hope, and a second chance at life. They offer pickup and have many donation drop off locations throughout the Chicago area.

The Brown Elephant has two locations on the north side of Chicago and one in Oak Park. They accept drop offs at all locations and have pickup service for furniture donations. All proceeds benefit LGBTQ health and fund care for the uninsured and under-insured at Howard Brown Health.

ReStore Chicago accepts gently-used furniture, appliances and building materials. They keep a rotating list of needed inventory. Drop offs are accepted at the Chicago location and in certain circumstances they will schedule free pick-up. They have other locations throughout the Chicago area. Sales benefit Habitat for Humanity's community improvement work.

Goodwill provides training, employment and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages who seek greater independence. Goodwill has numerous locations to drop off items in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs. They accept may items including vehicles and electronics.
