It attracted various immigrant groups, at first Polish and later Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans.


In the last quarter of the 20th century, artists and young professionals were drawn to the neighborhood due to its affordable housing which led to the area attracting young professionals and the neighborhood quickly gentrified. The once-bohemian enclave became a trendy and sought-after place to live, known for its hip atmosphere.

The boundaries of Bucktown are the Northern boundary where Western Avenue and the Chicago River meet at 3000 North, the Southern boundary 1800 North (The 606 Trail), the Western boundary 2400 West (Western Avenue), and the Eastern boundary the Chicago River. Bucktown's proximity to the Kennedy Expressway and public transportation make it an ideal place to live for commuters. It takes only approximately 20 minutes to reach downtown Chicago by car and 40 minutes by public transportation. The Blue Line stops at Western Avenue and there are several bus routes. The Metra Union Pacific North Line and Union Pacific Northwest Line both stop at Clybourn station.
