Bucktown History and Overview

The history of Bucktown dates back to the early 19th century when it was initially settled by Polish and German immigrants. In the early years, Bucktown was primarily a working-class neighborhood, housing workers from nearby factories and industrial areas. The area's name originated from the large number of goats, or "bucks," kept by the Polish immigrants in their yards. Over time, the name stuck and became associated with the neighborhood.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bucktown experienced significant industrialization and urbanization. The construction of the elevated train lines in the 1890s facilitated transportation to and from the neighborhood, leading to an influx of new residents. It attracted various immigrant groups, at first Polish and later Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans.

In the last quarter of the 20th century, artists and young professionals were drawn to the neighborhood due to its affordable housing which led to the area attracting young professionals and the neighborhood quickly gentrified. The once-bohemian enclave became a trendy and sought-after place to live, known for its hip atmosphere.
