Let's dive in and find the gems that await you in this beloved Chicago neighborhood.

Logan Square History and Overview

The history of Logan Square dates back to the early 19th-century when the area was primarily prairie until Martin Kimball purchased 160 acres of the land in 1836. Soon after, other settlers followed. Farmers sold their products by transporting them via Northwest Plank Road, now known as Milwaukee Avenue.

The neighborhood's name comes from General John A. Logan, a prominent Civil War general and politician. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Logan Square experienced a wave of urbanization and industrialization. The opening of the Logan Square Branch of the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad in 1895 facilitated transportation to and from downtown Chicago, attracting new residents to the area.

During this period, the neighborhood saw an influx of immigrants, including Polish, Scandinavian, and German communities. These diverse groups contributed to the cultural fabric of Logan Square, establishing churches, businesses, and social organizations.

In the mid-20th century, Logan Square faced challenges as many residents and businesses moved to the suburbs. The construction of the Kennedy Expressway in the 1960s further disrupted the neighborhood's stability, dividing it and causing the loss of some homes and businesses.

In 1963 the Logan Square Neighborhood Association was formed and spurred the revitalization of the neighborhood. Beginning in the 1960's Logan Square became home to many Hispanic immigrants. In recent decades, Logan Square attracted artists, young professionals, and families drawn to the neighborhood's historic architecture, vibrant community, and convenient location. Today, Logan Square is known for its lively entertainment and dining scene, with numerous bars, restaurants, and music venues.
